The aim is to offer strong authentication for access to sensitive resources: VPN, firewalls, bastion hosts, switches, etc.
Principle:
Combine two authentication factors to prove your identity:
✓ Something you know (your password)
✓ Something you own (your phone, for example)
The password generated is a time-based one-time password (TOTP), as described in RFC 6238.
A master secret is generated for each user, and single-use passwords are derived from it. The secret is usually transmitted in the form of a QR code.
